130 years on

But when the train came near to Wormit Bay,
Boreas he did loud and angry bray,
And shook the central girders of the Bridge of Tay
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember’d for a very long time.

I lived as a lad in Dundee for four years in the early 1950s, and the Tay Bridge disaster was always a talking point as Hogmanay loomed just a couple of days hence.

It struck me as a suitable mene tekel prior to the festivities,
a reminder before wishing friends and strangers a Happy New Year that... shit happens.
