A timely reminder

Each week, seven young people aged 18-24 years die on the roads of France in an accident linked to alcohol abuse and over 27 are injured. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays account for 56% of deaths of 18-24 year olds, 63% occur at night. This movie, released today, is the latest warning from the French road safety board.

I fear the statistics in Germany are little better. As for the Sandlands, even when alcohol is not in play...

A group of reckless drivers have been caught on camera deliberately spinning and skidding across the highway and weaving their way through six lanes of traffic. The video clip titled “Sheikh Zayed Road Madness!” has been posted on YouTube and lasts two minutes and 43 seconds. It shows other drivers desperately trying to get out of the reckless drivers’ path in order to avoid a pile-up.

Despite extensive safe driving campaigns and alarming car accident fatality figures coming out of the UAE, there is still a section of the youth population thriving on the adrenaline rush of fast driving and dangerous manoeuvres. Some have even gone as far as illegally faking Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) identification to close off roads, turning them into drag racing strips or drifting circuits.

Can films like this one help? One must hope so.
