A moot question

"The Flip Ultra has been the best-selling camcorder on Amazon.com since the day of its debut, capturing about 13% of the camcorder market." Or so Wikipedia informs me.

I well recall my conviction back in 2007 that the Flip camcorder was a game changer. I probably posted about it. 2007 was a year when I was feeling thoroughly entrepreneurial and such was my belief that this device had a huge future that I registered a website, flipr.com, seein a Flickr-type potential on the not too distant horizon.

In 2008 I returned from the SAndlands to Europe and in fact never found myself justified in buying a Flip Ultra. And last year, ironically, someone offered me $500 for my URL.

I may now have a look to see if I can find a Flip Ultra on sale somewhere. Having one of my own would be a salutory reminder of how easy it is to be absolutely wrong when predicting the implications of technological innovations.

More on the demise of Flip here from Wired Magazine.

Updated... Comment on this topic from Rosenblum and Pogue here.

A propos technical stupidity... Apologies to my readers for embedding in my previous post a videoclip with autoplay enabled. It meant that any time I booted up my browser there was an infernal racket to be heard, the raucous soundtrack of the otherwise fascinating trailer for the Goldilocks web series. Mea culpa...
