As set forth above, from the 1st of August 1746 the wearing of Highland Dress was prohibited by the English determined to demoralize the Scots.
Now I first wore the kilt as a schoolboy in Edinburgh and started collecting a few later in life. Three in various permissible tartans are in my wardrobe here in Munich and they are regularly worn. They have come to be more or less my trademark here in Schwabing.
One kilt got left behind in Abu Dhabi, alas.
I find it amusing that the 1746 law noted as punishment transportation 'beyond the seas, there to remain for the space of seven years'. Come to think of it, my sojourn in the Emirates was of that duration!
The law was, of course, quite quickly repealed and today the kilt enjoys increasing popularity.
My next may even be made of denim!
