With the topic of welfare so high on the news agenda I am bound to reflect on my relative good fortune. Even with no jobs as translator or voicer on the horizon, with risible royalty payments from my self-publishing efforts, I can get by. My monthly pension is topped up by what can only be called 'in-work benefits'. The German system (into which, of course, I have been paying for many a year) recognizes that if my income as a freelancer is inadequate, a monthly supplementary payment is made to ensure that an existence in genteel poverty is assured.
Could be worse... a lot worse.
