Local media news

A new print publication launches today here in the Sandlands. Xpress, from the same group as GulfNews, is a weekly tabloid free-sheet, a genre which is to my way of thinking a bit strange. It will be interesting to see how the advertising support develops.

Today GulfNews reported that SecretDubai won a Bloggie award as the best MENA blog. Good that the newspaper reported news of the blogosphere, even better that the recognition was given to a blog which was, for a considerable period of time, blocked for being slightly too snarky about Sandlands goings on.

Maybe there's hope that the ban on Flickr will one day be lifted. That'll be a happy day for several of the gifted Emirati photographers whose portfolios on Flickr are great publicity for their country and its culture.

Ironic that for many of its loyal users Flickr itself is seen as being too censorious. Miss Aniela's Blog (link in the blogroll) is worth reading today on this topic.
