Et alors!

For me this was the single brief moment yesterday which impressed me the most... when the maillot jaune headed the peloton on Rue de Rivoli, doing his bit to help his team-mate to win the stage.

The other image that I'll retain is that of the many, many Union Jacks on the Champs-Elysées.

I have been watching the Tour de France for so many years, never live, always on television. For even during the decade when Paris was my home I was a juillietist... in the habit of taking my summer holiday in July, rather than August... and so very often it was on a big screen at Cap d'Agde that I followed the cyclist on their stages through my favourite country.

But never did I expect to see a Brit triumph on the Champs. Yes, I found it moving yesterday. It would only have been better if I had been watching at that café, Le 1664 at Héliopolis,  close to the beach...
