I've said it before... but even after five decades the onset of the month of September is linked to a ' back to school' feeling following a long summer break.
In Munich decent summer weather only arrived in July, very late this year. Ironically the lovely warm days began when, after two and a half years, I no longer had a daily translation assignment to deliver to the client who now no longer required my services. So in a way I have been 'on holiday' for a little over two months.
Yesterday could have been one of my last late afternoons spent most pleasantly at a table on the sidewalk in front of Café Schwabing. It is predicted that we will now be in autumnal mode. No more Munich ladies driving top-down BMWs and looking like film stars, no longer the beauty of their long-legged daughters in cut-off jeans shorts, their sons brawny in muscle shirts.
Damn it, I'll have to settle for an inside table once again, Sky Sport on all seven big monitors. But, then, maybe the 'back to school' feeling will be reflected in the form of new translation jobs. I certainly hope so.
