10 June 1910

My sister comments that I would have come to know "an unhappy man, unsure of the validity of his place in a society where woman were no longer playing a submissive role. His parental role models had reinforced the old order, his father possibly seeing how things were going and holding on for dear life... His choice of career [as a minister of the Church of Scotland] gave him no pleasure... A teaching role in a private school might possibly have been a better and more personally satisfying career though his unhappiness in general was, I believe, a personality trait."

His notes were short, the postcards always well chosen but, yes, the tone of his texts was often wistful.
