Irony.

The sentiment expressed in this wonderful sequence from West Side Story in 1961 seems sadly dated, although even at the time there was no lack of irony in the song's lyrics.

Who could then even have begun to imagine an America riven today by profound discord which will not end when the votes next Tuesday have been counted?
